The Wonder Constant
Across every system we study, the evidence changes, the models change, and the conclusions change. One term does not.
Work on enough different systems and you notice that almost nothing carries over. The instruments are different. The data has a different shape. The models that worked last time are the wrong family entirely. Expertise in one system buys you surprisingly little in the next one.
What does carry over is the posture you arrive with: the willingness to be genuinely uncertain about what is happening, and the impulse to find out rather than to decide. That is the term that stays fixed across every investigation. We call it the wonder constant, and the name of the company is a reminder to keep it there.
Why treat it as a constant
Because it is the thing most easily lost. Wonder is not the same as excitement, and it degrades in a specific way: it becomes conviction. You start with a question, you develop a hunch, the hunch becomes a working assumption, and eventually the assumption is doing the work that measurement was supposed to do. Nothing announces that transition while it is happening.
Wonder remains present across every system being investigated, even as the system, the evidence, the models, and the conclusions change.
Holding wonder constant is not a mood. It is an operating constraint with practical consequences: it is why we write the question down before the method, why we state assumptions where they can be attacked, and why revising a conclusion counts as the process working rather than the process failing.
