A shared foundation for measurement, modelling, and analysis
An exploratory look at whether the measurement and modelling needs that recur across unrelated initiatives are better served by one carefully built foundation than by code rewritten each time.
Research question
What would a shared, well-characterised measurement and modelling stack look like across systems that otherwise have nothing in common?
Overview
Across unrelated problems the same needs recur: estimate a quantity, attach an uncertainty to it, compare a model against data, and record enough that the result can be reproduced.
Sigma asks whether those recurring needs share enough structure to justify a common foundation — or whether the resemblance is superficial and a framework would only get in the way. The first question is whether the abstraction is real.
Approach
- Collect the concrete measurement and modelling tasks the other initiatives actually need, rather than the ones a framework would like them to need.
- Look for the shared structure, and be willing to conclude there is not enough of it.
- Prefer boring, well-tested foundations over novelty.
